Fenwick keeps the look of a normal ankle boots and changes everything you cannot see. A lace-up front takes the effort out of getting them on, while the wider forefoot leaves room over the toe joint. Every pair comes in three widths, from a Medium B through to an X-Wide 2E, so you pick the width as well as the size. From the supple leather-look upper to the Ortho-Step System, Fenwick is made for standing, walking and staying out longer.

What goes into every pair

What goes into every pair

Every style starts from the same set of choices about shape, padding and grip. Here is what that means in practice.

  • A layered footbed runs the full length of the shoe, from heel to toe.

    • Two foam densities, a firmer base with a softer top layer.
    • Shaped heel cup that holds the heel in place as you walk.
    • Keeps its shape rather than flattening after a few weeks.
  • The footbed is contoured along the inside edge instead of being flat.

    • Built-in contour that follows the shape of the foot.
    • Removable, so you can take it out and use your own.
  • The front of the shoe is shaped round and roomy rather than tapered to a point.

    • Extra width across the ball of the foot.
    • Rounded toe shape with room in front of the toes.
    • No overlays across the widest part of the shoe.
  • The inside is lined with a padded fabric and finished with as few seams as possible.

    • Padded collar and tongue around the ankle opening.
    • Smooth inner seams where the lining meets the upper.
  • Panels of stretch fabric sit where the shoe flexes most.

    • Knit or elastic panels over the top of the foot.
    • Moves with the foot through the step instead of resisting it.
  • A wide opening and a firm heel counter, so the shoe goes on standing up.

    • Wide ankle opening with a pull loop at the heel.
    • Set the laces once and leave them.
  • Built for wearing from morning to evening rather than for an hour at a time.

    • Full-length cushioning under both heel and forefoot.
    • Light sole unit, so the shoe does not feel heavy by the afternoon.
  • The upper is treated to shed light rain and splashes.

    • Treated upper that beads water on contact.
    • For showers, not puddles. These are not waterproof boots.
  • One fit, cut roomy, with an upper that gives as you move.

    • Wide feet get the space they need.
    • Narrower feet still sit snug and held.

  • Orthopaedic shoes are built with more room and more padding than an ordinary pair. In practice that means a wide toe box, extra depth over the instep, a cushioned footbed, and a smooth lining with no hard seams inside.

We do not design the shoes ourselves. We measure them and choose them, and a pair only goes on the site once it meets those criteria.

  • Look for a contoured footbed that fills the arch rather than lying flat, a deep heel cup that holds the heel still, and a thick cushioned block underneath the heel. An insole that lifts out matters too, so a prescribed one can go in its place.

  • A smooth interior with no hard seams anywhere, a soft padded lining right through the shoe, extra depth so nothing presses on the top of the foot, and a fastening you can adjust without forcing your foot in.

If you have reduced feeling in your feet, speak to your GP or podiatrist before changing footwear.

  • Extra width across the ball of the foot, no stitching or overlays across the widest point, a soft or stretch upper that gives at the joint, and a rounded toe shape rather than a tapered one.

  • A footbed shaped along the inner edge, a firm heel counter that keeps the ankle upright, and a wide flat sole that meets the ground square. A removable insole helps if you already wear your own orthotic.

  • A shock-absorbing midsole through the whole length, a level platform from heel to toe, and a wide sole base that stays steady on uneven ground.

  • Bending down gets harder as pregnancy goes on. Hands-free and side-zip styles let you step in and out without reaching your feet. A wide toe box, a stretch upper and extra cushioning also help when feet swell.
